In the Canadian Elite Basketball League, the championship format has been adjusted back to a single-game showdown. This decision was swiftly taken by the league, along with the Winnipeg Sea Bears and the Brampton Honey Badgers, shortly after the commencement of their best-of-three final at CAA Centre, which was unfortunately called off due to unsafe playing conditions caused by condensation on the court.
Brampton initially took a 6-0 lead, but the game was halted when Winnipeg caught up. The Sea Bears’ Xavier Moon, a three-time CEBL MVP, slipped on the court, prompting the suspension with 8:14 left in the first quarter. The rescheduled one-game final is set to take place on Saturday in Winnipeg at 3:30 p.m. ET, and will be broadcasted on CBC-TV, CBCSports.ca, and CBC Gem.
The league expressed that due to the inability to complete the best-of-three series within the allocated timeframe, a single-game championship was deemed the most equitable and practical way to crown a champion. This format change aligns with the championship structure used from 2019 to 2025.
In response to the cancellation, Honey Badgers CEO Al Whitley issued an apology. The two teams had previously met twice in the season, with Brampton emerging victorious in both encounters.
The Honey Badgers, former champions in 2022 when based in Hamilton, are now one win away from clinching their first title in Winnipeg. The Sea Bears embarked on a remarkable playoff journey, defeating the Saskatoon Mamba and shocking the top-seeded Vancouver Bandits in the West final.
Meanwhile, Brampton secured their spot by overcoming the Ottawa BlackJacks and the Niagara River Lions in the East semifinal and final, respectively. Notably, the final will showcase a unique off-court narrative, with both teams being owned by siblings – David Asper overseeing the Sea Bears and Leonard Asper leading the Honey Badgers.
