British tennis player Dan Evans expressed his displeasure over not being selected for the doubles event in the Davis Cup, hinting that he might consider quitting the Great Britain team due to feeling snubbed. Despite being a part of the victorious 2015 Davis Cup team, Evans felt insulted by the decision to exclude him from the doubles matches. He emphasized that his lack of regular doubles play on the tour should not have been a determining factor in his selection.
In an interview with the i newspaper, Evans stated that he found it disappointing and somewhat insulting to never have been chosen to play doubles in the Davis Cup, despite his confidence in his doubles abilities. He suggested that the selection process should focus more on game style compatibility rather than solely relying on doubles rankings.
Evans’ frustration peaked during the 2021 Davis Cup Finals when he was left out of the doubles matches in favor of other players. Despite his efforts to be considered for the doubles, he was overlooked, leading him to contemplate his future involvement in the team. However, in a subsequent match against Colombia, Evans and his partner secured a victory in the doubles rubber, contributing to Great Britain’s success in the Davis Cup.
Unfortunately, Evans missed the 2023 Davis Cup Finals due to an injury. As for the ongoing 2025 Davis Cup Finals, Great Britain suffered a defeat to Japan in the qualifying round, eliminating them from the tournament. Italy, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, advanced to the semi-finals with wins over Austria. Berrettini’s triumph over Jurij Rodionov and Cobolli’s victory against Filip Misolic secured Italy’s spot in the last four, setting up a showdown against Belgium.
