The Davis Cup final’s second singles match faced an unexpected pause as a spectator fell ill in the stands. Flavio Cobolli of Italy was aiming to break Jaume Munar’s serve when he noticed the issue with the fan.
Munar dominated the first set 6-1 and was leading in the second set when Cobolli had a chance to break back. However, the game was interrupted when medical assistance was required in the stands, forcing both players to their benches.
Commentator Arvind Parmar commended Cobolli for his swift response, emphasizing the crowd’s prompt reaction and the player’s attentiveness to the situation.
Umpire Marijana Veljovic held discussions with the players during the break, while Italian captain Filippo Volandri offered advice to Cobolli.
After the fan was safely removed from the stands, Parmar noted a potential delay if further assistance was needed to ensure the person’s safe descent from the stands.
Following a ten-minute delay, Cobolli managed to break Munar’s serve and evened the second set at 1-1.
Italy held a 1-0 lead going into the second singles match, courtesy of Matteo Berrettini’s victory over Pablo Carreno Busta. A win for Cobolli could secure Italy’s third consecutive title, a feat not seen since the USA’s five-time streak in 1972.
Alternatively, a win for Munar would force a decisive doubles round in the competition. Notably, both nations were without star players Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner for the final, as both had withdrawn before the tournament commenced.
