Mark Wood’s Injury Extends, England’s Ashes Hopes at Risk

England may have to face a longer absence of fast bowler Mark Wood due to injury, despite a strong resurgence in the Ashes competition. Joe Root’s exceptional unbeaten century, his first in Australia, propelled the English team to a commanding position on the first day of the second Test at The Gabba.

Root’s outstanding performance, scoring 135 not out, guided England to a total of 325-9, supported by contributions from Zak Crawley (76) and Jofra Archer (32 not out). While Australia had some successful moments, the day ultimately belonged to Ben Stokes’ squad.

However, concerns arose off the field regarding Wood’s knee injury. Initially ruled out for the second Test, Wood might also miss the following match in Adelaide as he provided an update on his condition. The veteran bowler, who last played in Perth, acknowledged the uncertainty of his return before Christmas.

Wood expressed hope of potentially returning for the third Test in Adelaide but hinted that a comeback might be more realistic for the matches in Melbourne and Sydney. His history of injury setbacks, including a recent knee issue, has plagued his international career.

Former England captain Michael Atherton highlighted Wood’s significance to the team’s pace strategy and expressed pessimism about his impact on the series due to the injury setback. Wood’s absence led to a lineup change, with spin-bowling allrounder Will Jacks replacing him in the team.

Despite Root’s stellar performance, Australia’s left-arm bowler Mitchell Starc shone, claiming 6-71 with the pink ball. The tourists adjusted their approach in Brisbane by including a spin option in Jacks to enhance their batting depth.
