Conservative and Bloc MPs have urged an emergency meeting of the House of Commons public safety committee to investigate espionage allegations involving a former Canadian intern apprehended by Belgian authorities on suspicion of espionage.
Expressing deep concerns, Conservative MP Frank Caputo emphasized the need to scrutinize Canada’s national security screening procedures in light of these allegations. The Parliament must assess potential deficiencies in the security screening system that could have jeopardized sensitive information or compromised the security of Canada and its allies.
The individual in question, identified as Biwei Zhang, served as an intern at NATO’s Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons, Belgium. Zhang’s background as a systems engineer with expertise in economics was revealed through a CBC News investigation.
Reports from security sources in Europe, including Reuters, indicate that Zhang allegedly displayed suspicious behavior that attracted the attention of NATO’s internal security services. Allegedly, she showed excessive curiosity about colleagues, ventured into restricted areas, and accessed files beyond her designated role in SHAPE’s IT Department.
Zhang is currently under detainment by Belgian security officials, although the allegations against her have not been substantiated in court.
In response to the incident, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree has pledged to investigate Canada’s security screening processes thoroughly. The committee will delve into how Zhang obtained the internship at NATO’s military headquarters, the extent of security screening conducted before granting her access, any red flags raised by Canadian or allied authorities, and the adequacy of monitoring measures.
Anandasangaree emphasized the importance of uncovering the truth behind the situation to prevent similar incidents in the future. Prime Minister Mark Carney also indicated that Canadian security officials were proactive and involved in the ongoing investigation.
