Skate Canada has announced that Mike Slipchuk will be stepping down as high-performance director at the end of the 2026-27 season, concluding a 20-year tenure in the position. Slipchuk joined Skate Canada in 2006 and during his leadership, Canadian figure skaters achieved remarkable success, securing a total of 10 Olympic and 24 world championship medals.
Notably, four of Canada’s Olympic medals were earned under Slipchuk’s guidance at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. The gold was claimed by ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, as well as the team event skaters. Virtue and Moir’s gold medals made them the most decorated Olympic figure skaters in history, with a total of three gold and two silver medals.
Despite recent Olympic challenges, including no medals in Beijing 2022, Canada managed to secure a bronze earlier this year in Milan Cortina through the ice dance duo of Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier. Over the past two decades, Canada has seen success in various disciplines, with notable achievements such as Patrick Chan’s three consecutive men’s world titles from 2011 to 2013 and Virtue and Moir’s three gold medals.
The most recent world champions from Canada were pairs skaters Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps in 2024. Upon stepping down, Slipchuk will continue to support Skate Canada in an advisory capacity to facilitate the transition to a new high-performance director. Reflecting on his tenure, Slipchuk expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with exceptional athletes and coaches, highlighting the pride of witnessing Canadian athletes stand on the podium with their well-deserved medals.
