Sky Sports host Jo Wilson has shared her experience battling cancer, expressing her initial fear of mortality and the challenging journey she underwent post-diagnosis. Diagnosed with cervical cancer in June 2022 following a routine screening, Wilson underwent extensive treatment for six weeks as the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. Fortunately, she received the all-clear in June 2023 after a successful recovery.
Having joined Sky Sports in 2011, Wilson underwent radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and brachytherapy to combat the cancer. While these treatments saved her life, they caused early menopause, significantly impacting her broadcasting career. The diagnosis came just two years after the birth of her daughter Mabel in 2020, intensifying the emotional turmoil she experienced during the ordeal.
Speaking candidly in a Sky Sports News documentary called “Football, Cancer, and Me,” Wilson shared her reluctance to burden others with her diagnosis while grappling with thoughts of mortality. The documentary also features discussions with colleagues Emma Saunders and former manager Tony Mowbray, who recounted their own battles with cancer. Mowbray disclosed a bowel cancer diagnosis, while Saunders underwent surgery for a brain infection following a thyroid cancer diagnosis, leaving her partner shocked by the visible scar.
Reflecting on the challenging times, Wilson emphasized the importance of raising awareness about cancer symptoms and early detection, hoping to inspire others to seek medical help when needed. The documentary sheds light on the personal struggles of individuals within the sports industry facing cancer, highlighting the resilience and courage required to navigate such health challenges.
