“Snowplow Encounter Unveils Major Drug Operation”

The sequence of events kicked off with a severe snowstorm.

During the blizzard, a snowplow driver encountered a grey Honda CRV parked on Ridge Road in St. John’s. Inside, the driver was found slumped over the wheel, the engine still running.

Within 10 minutes of the initial discovery, police arrived to find Martin Marks slowly regaining consciousness, realizing the dire situation he was in. Subsequent drug testing revealed the presence of cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl, hydromorphone, and oxycodone in his system.

Upon searching the vehicle, law enforcement uncovered a BB gun concealed under the driver’s seat, in addition to a significant stash of nearly 100 grams of cocaine, 44 grams of crystal meth, 33 hydromorphone pills, and 124 oxycodone pills.

Describing the findings as a “mobile pharmacy,” provincial court Judge Paul Noble reacted during the court proceedings, to which prosecutor Trevor Bridger hinted that more revelations were to come.

Following the traffic stop, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary initiated a surveillance operation spanning from February to September 2024 targeting Marks and his partner, Emma Murphy.

Over the surveillance period, police observed the couple engaging in 84 suspected drug transactions across 47 instances, primarily involving swift hand-to-hand exchanges, as outlined in an agreed statement of facts presented in Marks’s case.

Besides using their St. John’s residence for illicit activities, the couple also operated out of a camper in Cochrane Pond, approximately 25 kilometers away from St. John’s city center on Crown land.

During the summer of 2024, an undercover officer known as UC Vic conducted two purchases, acquiring 8.7 grams of 90% pure cocaine on one occasion and 16 grams of 95% pure cocaine on another.

On September 22, 2024, authorities deemed there was sufficient cause for arrest. Warrants were obtained to search both the couple’s residence and the camper at Cochrane Pond.

The searches led to the discovery of a substantial amount of illegal substances, including 521 grams of fentanyl and 846 grams of various fentanyl mixtures such as carfentanil, acetylfentanyl, methylfentanyl, and fluorofentanyl.

This marked the largest fentanyl seizure in the history of the province.

In response to the unfolding events, Judge Noble likened the situation to a scene from the TV series Breaking Bad.
