“Survey Reveals Concerning Levels of Corridor Care in England’s A&E”

Almost 20% of patients in England’s A&E departments were found to be receiving care on trolleys or chairs during the summer, according to a recent survey. The Royal College of Emergency Medicine conducted the research, highlighting corridor care as a significant concern that jeopardizes patient safety. The study revealed that 19% of patients were being treated in corridors, with an additional 34% receiving care in ambulances outside the departments.

The strain on the NHS was evident, as 78% of respondents expressed concerns about patient safety due to the substandard care being provided under the current conditions. Testimonies from patients further emphasized the negative impact of corridor care, with one individual expressing feelings of vulnerability and neglect while waiting in a corridor.

The Royal College of Emergency Medicine presented the findings to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Emergency Care, shedding light on the challenges faced by both patients and healthcare professionals. The report emphasized the urgent need for improved funding and resources to address the issues plaguing emergency departments across the country.

Politicians, including Labour MP Rosena Allin-Khan, stressed the importance of supporting frontline staff and enhancing resources for the NHS to ensure quality care for all patients. The Royal College of Nursing echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for immediate action to prevent prolonged suffering and ensure patient safety in emergency departments.

Efforts are being made by the Department of Health and Social Care to address the issue, with investments in urgent and emergency care centers, ambulances, mental health crisis facilities, and vaccination programs. The aim is to eliminate corridor care practices and enhance the overall quality of healthcare services to meet the increasing demands and challenges faced by the healthcare system.
