Reports highlighted the perilous journey undertaken by these migrants, including children and unaccompanied minors, raising concerns about the risks associated with irregular migration.
The city of Ceuta, a 18.5-square-kilometer peninsula with a population of about 83,000, has a unique geopolitical status as an autonomous Spanish territory located on the northern shores of Africa. Ceuta and Melilla are known to be sought-after destinations for migrants due to their proximity to Europe and the potential for better opportunities.
Migrants from Morocco and other parts of Africa often target Ceuta and Melilla for entry into Spain, either being turned back immediately or processed for asylum. The recent surge was attributed to a Spanish Supreme Court ruling on sea arrivals not facing summary deportation, fueling speculation and prompting a swift influx of migrants.
The response to the situation saw Spain deploying armed forces and additional police to manage the influx, while Moroccan security forces took measures to prevent further crossings at the gates to Ceuta. The aftermath witnessed a significant number of migrants attempting to return to Morocco due to lack of resources and shelter in Ceuta.
