“UK Workers Demand Fair Sick Pay in Face of Cancer Battles”

At the age of 23, I received a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer. This news came as a shock, leading to a treatment plan involving five weeks of radiotherapy at a specialized facility for young individuals. The daily commute of 40 miles to the hospital for treatment became a significant challenge.

The demanding side effects of the treatment, coupled with the time-consuming processes of preparation, parking, and waiting at the hospital, made it unfeasible to continue working at my previous job in a major supermarket chain. Consequently, I required an extended leave of absence.

During this critical period, I hoped for support from my employer, but the sick pay benefits in the UK proved to be inadequate. After only two weeks of paid sick leave from my employer, I transitioned to statutory sick pay (SSP) for several months, amounting to less than £3 per hour for a full-time worker like myself.

The lack of adequate sick pay support not only affected me but also many others in similar situations. Some individuals I encountered did not receive any sick pay at all during their treatment, highlighting a glaring issue in the system.

Insufficient sick pay also impacts individuals needing time off for minor illnesses. For those on shift work, delayed payment starting from the fourth day of illness could result in a substantial loss of income for nearly a week.

The attempt by certain members of the House of Lords to oppose the implementation of day one sick pay rights through the Employment Rights Bill was surprising. Denying these rights and neglecting support for low-income earners is unjust. These reforms merely advocate for the basic provision of support to allow people to rest, recuperate, and return to work safely.

While many countries, particularly in Europe, already offer such support as a standard practice, it is crucial for the UK to catch up and ensure a fair sick pay system for all. Workers affected by inadequate sick pay, including myself, urge the House of Lords to pass the bill promptly, paving the way for essential improvements in sick pay policies for millions of individuals.
