Car shoppers are being advised to avoid a popular compact car from MG, a Chinese-owned brand, due to a serious safety issue uncovered during recent tests. Euro NCAP, an organization focused on crash safety, has flagged a significant flaw with the MG 3, prompting them to suggest looking at other options. Which?, a consumer group, has also issued a warning against purchasing this model.
The MG 3 hatchback, priced from £17,245 and available in petrol and full hybrid versions, was introduced in February 2024. Over 9,000 vehicles of this model had been registered in the UK by the end of March 2025.
During testing, Euro NCAP discovered a critical safety failure with the MG 3, specifically during a challenging frontal offset test. This test involves crashing the car at an angle into an obstacle at 62mph, where the right-hand seat adjuster of the driver’s seat failed, causing the seat to twist during impact. Euro NCAP noted that this failure was unprecedented in their extensive history of testing vehicles since 1997.
Despite the safety concern, Euro NCAP awarded the MG 3 four out of five stars due to its performance in other areas of the crash test. However, the organization mentioned that their scoring system does not currently accommodate deductions for such component failures.
Dr. Aled Williams from Euro NCAP expressed concern over the car’s fundamental weakness in its seat latching mechanism, emphasizing the importance of occupant safety. Euro NCAP recommended consumers explore safer alternatives using their search tool. The UK’s DVSA is reportedly monitoring the situation closely.
MG has announced plans to address the driver’s seat latching mechanism and airbag starting in August and October, respectively. However, these changes will not apply to vehicles already sold.
Dr. Michiel van Ratingen of Euro NCAP urged car manufacturers, especially those from China, to adhere to stringent safety standards to ensure consumer safety. MG, now owned by SAIC Motor Corporation, a major Chinese car manufacturer, has seen a significant increase in car sales in the UK.
In response to the safety concerns raised by Euro NCAP, MG stated they are actively investigating the issue and collaborating with authorities to address the specific concern with the driver’s seat mechanism. They assured customers of their commitment to resolving the matter promptly and providing updates accordingly.
