Drake Landon, an employee and artist at the theatre, came to the rescue. Due to a shipping error, the theatre never received the official posters for the latest Spider-Man release. In response, Landon, a 19-year-old, was asked by his manager to create a replacement poster inspired by the internet meme character Spooderman.
Spooderman is a comical, crudely drawn parody of Marvel’s Spider-Man that originated around 2012. Landon, though capable of drawing the actual Spider-Man, decided to embrace the challenge and drew a Spooderman poster in line with the “Brand New Day” design. Beneath his artwork, Landon included a brief note apologizing for the absence of the real posters and any resulting inconvenience.
The hand-drawn Spooderman poster by Landon gained attention from movie-goers like Adam Woodrow, who found it delightful during a visit to Famous Players with his son Rogan. Rogan took a picture of Landon next to his creation and shared it on local community platforms. The posts about Landon’s Spooderman poster quickly gained traction online, receiving thousands of likes, including over 54,000 upvotes on the Marvel Studios subreddit.
Despite the acclaim, Landon humbly attributes credit to the original idea of Spooderman and those who created it years ago. While some suggest he should draw all movie posters at the theatre or sell his Spooderman drawings, Landon prefers to dedicate his spare time to drawing robots, intricate machines, and weapons.
Landon’s father, Craig, expressed immense pride in his son’s creativity and the recognition he has received. Although Cineplex plans to replace Landon’s poster with the official “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” poster, they intend to find a new spot within the theatre for the hand-drawn rendition. Landon hopes to produce his prints of the now-iconic poster in the future.
