The siege has garnered public criticism from the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, a staunch supporter of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, who labeled the settlers besieging a Palestinian home as “Israeli terrorists.” White House officials are reportedly pressuring Netanyahu to condemn the siege following concerns raised by Washington upon discovering that the home of a Palestinian-American was among those under siege.
Emphasizing the importance of a stable West Bank for Israel’s security and the administration’s peace goals for the region, a White House official highlighted the significance of addressing the situation. Netanyahu has refrained from commenting on the Qusra siege, with neither his office nor the White House responding immediately to requests for comments.
The escalation of settler violence in the West Bank in recent years has raised concerns, especially following the 2023 attacks on Israel led by Hamas. Condemning the settlers could pose political risks for Netanyahu, particularly as an election approaches, potentially alienating settler voters crucial for his right-wing coalition. Trapped residents in Qusra have received aid from foreign and Israeli activists, although military restrictions have hindered direct deliveries to the besieged homes.
The United Nations reported that around 15 Palestinians, including children, were trapped without basic necessities like water and electricity. Footage captured settlers setting up a tent in the area, prompting the arrival of Israeli army vehicles and soldiers to dismantle it. Netanyahu’s government has spearheaded a significant expansion of settlements in the West Bank, a move criticized by rights groups as part of a broader strategy to seize more land and connect existing settlements.
The siege initiated by settlers involved road closures, tent installations, and disruptions to utilities, prompting concerns about the escalating tensions.
