A Braintree couple, Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, have successfully reduced their monthly heating costs to £40 by participating in a pioneering energy program. Instead of a traditional gas boiler, they now use a unique system consisting of over 500 computer banks housed in their shed, generating heat that is transferred to their hot water system.
Previously spending £375 monthly to heat their two-bedroom bungalow, the Bridges now enjoy bills ranging from £40 to £70. The installation of the data center in December 2024 has significantly improved their heating efficiency. Mr. Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed relief at being able to comfortably adjust their heating without financial concerns, particularly benefiting his wife, Lesley, who suffers from spinal stenosis aggravated by cold temperatures.
Developed by Thermify, the HeatHub data center is part of the UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project, aimed at assisting low-income households in transitioning to a net-zero energy environment. The Bridges also had solar panels installed on their roof as part of the project.
Mr. Bridges lauded the program, highlighting the compact size and efficiency of the data center, which has transformed their living conditions. The couple’s bungalow now remains uniformly warm, eliminating cold spots and reducing overall heating costs. Encouraged by their positive experience, Mr. Bridges recommended the system to others, emphasizing its effectiveness and potential for wider adoption.
Thermify’s CEO, Travis Theune, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing clean and affordable energy solutions, with a focus on eliminating fuel poverty in the UK. The innovative technology employed in the Bridges’ home not only reduces carbon emissions but also significantly lowers heating expenses.
Eastlight Community Homes’ Daniel Greenwood commended the collaborative efforts with SHIELD partners in implementing the heat hub installation, emphasizing the positive impact on residents’ comfort and energy costs. The successful trial in the Bridges’ home has paved the way for expanding the initiative to benefit more households in subsequent project phases.
UK Power Networks’ innovation program manager, Jack McKellar, highlighted the ambitious goals of the SHIELD project to support vulnerable households with low-carbon technologies, aiming for substantial scale-up by 2030. With a focus on inclusivity and environmental sustainability, the project aligns with the UK’s transition to a greener future.
