The ex-chief of the Navy has raised concerns about the potential for the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to escalate into a nuclear clash. Admiral Lord West, the former First Sea Lord, issued a stark warning, stating that Britain is essentially engaged in a conflict with Moscow. He highlighted the concept of “grey zone warfare,” which involves hostile actions beyond traditional armed combat, such as Russian interference with undersea cables and drone intrusions along the eastern flank of Nato.
Lord West expressed uncertainty about finding a resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the undesirability of a full-scale war between Nato and Russia due to the potential dire consequences, including the risk of a nuclear exchange. Former Nato General Secretary Lord Robertson, who conducted a comprehensive review of the nation’s defense capabilities, stated that Britain is inadequately prepared to counter the threats it currently faces.
Experts have previously cautioned about increasing Russian activities targeting the UK, including cyberattacks, reconnaissance flights, arson attacks, and submarine infiltrations. Sir Ken McCallum, the director of MI5, recently highlighted Russia’s intent to sow chaos and destruction globally, resorting to proxy agents after the expulsion of its spies from European embassies.
Lord Robertson emphasized the urgent need for bolstering support to President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government to dissuade Vladimir Putin from continuing his aggressive actions. He stressed the significance of assisting Ukraine to counter Putin’s ambitions, which extend beyond territorial expansion in eastern Ukraine, posing a broader threat to regional security. Putin must be convinced that his current actions will not lead to a favorable outcome, as his territorial gains remain limited.
