A tragic incident occurred at Disneyland Resort in California when a visitor met with a fatal accident while riding on the popular Matterhorn Bobsled attraction back in 1984. The victim, Dolly Regene Young, aged 47, was thrown from the ride, resulting in her decapitation after being struck by an oncoming cart.
The incident took place in the late afternoon, around 3:30 pm, as Young’s unfastened seatbelt led to her ejection from the ride. Her abrupt removal went unnoticed by her friends due to the swift nature of the event, with Young positioned at the rear of the cart, making it challenging for her companions to realize she had been ejected.
Authorities are still investigating whether the seatbelt was intentionally undone or if there was a malfunction involved. Fatal accidents of this kind are extremely rare in the park’s long history, with no similar tragic incidents reported for decades.
Following the accident, the ride was promptly stopped within 30 seconds to prevent additional injuries and to provide immediate aid to Young. Disneyland spokesperson Bob Roth disclosed that Young’s friends only became aware of her fall after the ride concluded. Fortunately, no individuals in the other cart that collided with Young sustained injuries.
Roth expressed bewilderment over the incident, emphasizing that there were no mechanical issues or breakdowns, raising questions about how Young was ejected from the ride. The Matterhorn attraction was temporarily closed after the incident but reopened the next day. The ride accommodated eight riders, each securely fastened in a single file across two carriages as they navigated a track around a snow-covered mountain.
The cart that struck Young was estimated to be moving at 20 mph, resulting in her immediate death. Regrettably, this was not the first fatality on the Matterhorn ride, as a similar tragic incident occurred in 1964, claiming the life of a 15-year-old boy shortly after the ride’s launch.
Another fatality linked to the same attraction took place when Mark Maples, accompanied by two schoolmates, vanished during the ride in unclear circumstances. Maples reportedly fell from the carriage after potentially unfastening his seatbelt, leading to a fatal fall beside the ride’s tracks.
