A 34-year-old man tragically lost his life while working a temporary job at a Walmart in New York. Jdimytai Damour, a former customer service representative, took the seasonal position to earn money for his bills and education. On Black Friday in 2008, amidst the chaos of eager shoppers seeking deals, Damour was trampled to death by a crowd of over 2,000 people at the Green Acres Mall.
Damour, a Freeport High School graduate with a passion for reading and poetry, aspired to become a teacher. His untimely death shocked his family and community. The autopsy revealed that he died from asphyxiation due to the pressure on his chest caused by the stampede. Other employees were also injured during the chaotic event, with one pregnant woman among the casualties.
Following the tragic incident, it was reported that Walmart failed to have adequate security measures in place to handle the large crowd. The supermarket’s press release expressed regret over the unforeseen tragedy despite their efforts to enhance security and manage the situation.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1500 demanded an investigation into Damour’s death, labeling the incident as preventable. Union President Bruce Both criticized the lack of safety measures and oversight, emphasizing the need for better crowd control and management during such events.
