Authorities are looking into an uncommon incident at a state-owned liquor store where an inebriated raccoon crashed through the ceiling, vandalized the establishment, and ended up unconscious in the restroom. The furry intruder caused damage by breaking bottles and leaving a strong smell of alcohol in Virginia. Initially thought to be a routine burglary, the situation took an unexpected turn when the suspect, a drunken raccoon, was discovered the next day.
The intoxicated raccoon was found in a stupor between a toilet and a trash bin, described as “very drunk” by the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter. Officials safely captured the masked culprit and took him back to the shelter to sober up before questioning. Following some rest and showing no signs of harm except perhaps a hangover and questionable decisions, the raccoon was released back into the wild with a hope of learning from the experience.
The raccoon entered the store by breaking through a ceiling tile, disabling the CCTV system, which hindered investigators from determining if the animal deliberately targeted the alcohol. Staff found an aisle soaked in alcohol with shattered glass scattered around after the raccoon went through the stock, showing a preference for hard liquor over wine in a more chaotic scene than typical human break-ins.
The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority has not commented on the incident, which reflects a growing trend of wildlife encounters in the United States. Raccoons, found in various environments, are known for their curiosity and ability to access places like homes, offices, and shops by climbing and opening containers.
Experts warn that due to urban waste and shrinking natural habitats, raccoons are drawn closer to human settlements, leading to frequent intrusions in urban areas. In the wild, raccoons have been seen consuming fermented fruit, exhibiting behaviors that resemble drunkenness, which has resulted in incidents of intoxicated animals entering human spaces and causing damage.
This incident in Virginia is not the first of its kind, as there have been previous cases of raccoons breaking into liquor stores, including one in Tennessee and another in Brooklyn. Wildlife encounters with substances like alcohol or drugs are not uncommon, as seen in an incident in Ohio where a raccoon named “Chewy” was found with a meth pipe during a traffic stop.
Virginia authorities have prohibited the raccoon from returning to the store, with staff relieved that only bottles were damaged. They expressed gratitude to Officer Martin for ensuring the raccoon’s safe return after its unexpected escapade left a costly mess behind.
