Passengers on a sailing vessel made an urgent distress call when their boat overturned in rough waters hundreds of miles off Cape Hatteras in North Carolina. The Virginia Coast Guard reported that five individuals had to abandon ship due to water ingress, prompting a rescue operation involving a helicopter and ship deployment by the coast guard.
All five people were safely rescued and found to be in good condition after being located in a life raft by the Coast Guard. The operation involved coordination with a large warship, the Cutter Angela McShan, and the use of an Air Station Elizabeth City HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew.
The crew members successfully recovered the stranded individuals and transported them back to safety. Video footage captured the sinking boat and the subsequent rescue, highlighting the effective response by the Coast Guard.
This rescue effort followed a similar incident where passengers from a sinking catamaran near the Dominican Republic were rescued by naval officials after the vessel submerged unexpectedly during a day trip from a cruise ship.
