An Atlanta mother is facing murder charges for allegedly fatally stabbing her 11-year-old daughter before attempting suicide. Shannen Grimes, 42, is accused of murder, felony murder, cruelty to children, tampering with evidence, and possession of a weapon in connection with her daughter Genesis’ death on November 14 in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
Sandy Springs Police Sgt. Leon Millholland expressed sympathy for the family, community, and officers involved in the tragic incident. Emergency services responded to a welfare check at Grimes’ residence after her sister reported a suicide attempt. They found Grimes with wrist injuries and later discovered Genesis’ body in a recliner, showing signs of stabbing.
Grimes allegedly confessed to the crime while being transported to the hospital, and disturbing text messages she sent to her sister further indicated her involvement. Police found bloodstains, knives, and cleaning materials in Grimes’ home. She later told officers that she believed her actions would lead to a shared rebirth with her daughter.
Authorities confirmed no one else was present during the incident, and there was no evidence of a break-in at the property. Grimes is now in custody awaiting a grand jury trial at Fulton County Jail.
