Britain’s defense chief has issued a stark warning about the increasing threats faced by the UK, following incidents where Russian spy ships targeted RAF pilots with lasers. In an interview with The Mirror, Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized the escalating aggression from Russian President Vladimir Putin and urged the public to acknowledge a heightened level of danger. He disclosed that the Navy and Air Force had been mobilized to confront the Kremlin’s spy vessel, Yantar, which recently entered UK waters.
Confirming that British aircraft had been subjected to laser targeting by the Russians, Healey condemned such actions as extremely hazardous. He directly addressed Putin, stating, “We see you,” and emphasized the readiness of the military to respond if the spy ship altered its course, intensifying tensions between the UK and Moscow.
Describing the capabilities of the Yantar, which is equipped for surveillance during peacetime and sabotage in conflict, Healey highlighted the vessel’s presence near Scottish waters as a significant concern. He underscored the need for a heightened defense posture in response to Putin’s increasing belligerence, emphasizing the government’s commitment to a substantial rise in defense expenditure.
The Defense Secretary referenced a previous encounter where a Royal Navy submarine intercepted the Yantar near undersea cables, underscoring the ongoing threat posed by Russian activities. He emphasized the importance of vigilance and readiness, emphasizing that the UK was closely monitoring the vessel and had previously taken action against it.
Healey issued a clear warning to Putin, signaling the UK’s awareness of Russian actions and its preparedness for any potential escalation. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper echoed these sentiments, attributing Russia’s heightened aggressiveness to setbacks in Ukraine and emphasizing the need for a resolute response.
Recent developments, including an explosion on a train near the Ukrainian border, allegedly orchestrated by Russia, have further heightened tensions. The Polish government labeled the incident as an act of state terrorism, leading to the closure of the last remaining Russian consulate in the country.
In response to these provocations, the UK has pledged support to Poland and remains vigilant against further acts of aggression. The Yantar’s presence in international waters has raised concerns, with the Dutch navy previously escorting the vessel out of the North Sea. The UK government’s stance on Russian interference remains firm, though specific diplomatic actions have not been disclosed.
As the nation prepares for the Budget, with defense a central focus, Healey emphasized Labour’s commitment to bolstering defense spending. He criticized other political parties for their perceived weaknesses on national security issues, positioning Labour as the party dedicated to protecting Britain’s interests.
