“UK’s DragonFire Laser System Intercepts High-Speed Drones, Boosts Defense”

Britain’s innovative DragonFire laser system has successfully intercepted high-speed drones, marking a significant advancement in the country’s defense capabilities. During recent trials conducted at the MOD’s Hebrides range, the laser effectively neutralized drones capable of reaching speeds of up to 650 km/h, surpassing the velocity of a Formula 1 car. This cutting-edge laser technology, reminiscent of Star Wars, boasts a cost of just £10 per shot and exhibits remarkable precision, able to target a £1 coin from a kilometer away.

Following this achievement, a £316 million contract has been granted to MBDA to supply new systems to the Royal Navy by 2027, five years ahead of the initial schedule, with plans to equip a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer. DragonFire, unveiled as part of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), represents Europe’s first high-power laser system and stands as one of NATO’s most advanced directed energy weapons programs.

The implementation of the state-of-the-art DragonFire laser is expected to generate and support 590 jobs throughout the UK, underscoring the pivotal role of defense in driving economic growth. This initiative will create 200 skilled positions in Scotland, 185 jobs in the South West of England, and 75 employment opportunities in the East of England, aligning with the Government’s commitment to fostering change.

Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, emphasized the significance of this high-power laser system in positioning the Royal Navy at the forefront of innovation within NATO, enhancing the UK’s defensive capabilities in response to evolving threats. He reiterated the Government’s dedication to reinforcing British industry and job creation through defense investments, highlighting the sector’s role as a catalyst for economic development nationwide.

Douglas Alexander, Scottish Secretary, hailed the recent £316 million contract award and the successful drone interception trials by DragonFire as testament to Scotland’s indispensable expertise in bolstering national security and its global reputation as a defense center of excellence. Noting the positive impact on Scotland’s defense sector, he praised the UK Government’s efforts to leverage defense investments for enhanced growth, emphasizing the importance of supporting service personnel and Scottish industry for collective security, job creation, and community prosperity.
