Father-Daughter Duo Shines at International Whistling Contest

A participant on the BBC quiz show “Only Connect” casually mentioned entering an international whistling competition, sparking curiosity in Ben Shannon. Intrigued, he and his daughter, Sumire, joined the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list for fun.

Initially not taking it seriously, Ben saw this as a lighthearted activity to enjoy with his daughter during the pandemic. However, their journey took a surprising turn when they made the cut for the competition held in Los Angeles.

Realizing the contest’s seriousness, Ben sought guidance from Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva, who critiqued their audition tapes. Motivated by the challenge, Ben and Sumire embarked on rigorous training to hone their skills for the championship.

After dedicated practice sessions and a whirlwind trip to Hollywood, they found themselves at the prestigious Masters of Musical Whistling competition. Surrounded by talented contestants from around the globe, Ben and Sumire marveled at the diverse performances showcasing whistling as an art form.

Overcoming his past ironic outlook, Ben embraced the genuine passion and talent of the participants, including his daughter, who won silver in the kid’s category. Ben clinched gold in the level one adults category, a significant achievement that resonated deeply with him.

Reflecting on the experience, Ben realized the importance of embracing sincerity and passion, shedding his ironic facade to pursue what truly matters. The competition not only brought success but also a newfound appreciation for genuine expression and dedication to one’s craft.
