Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has assigned Alberta MP Dane Lloyd the role of leading the party’s efforts for the upcoming Alberta referendum on separation. Poilievre revealed this appointment in a letter to Lloyd, emphasizing Lloyd’s background as a long-time Albertan and former Canadian Armed Forces reservist as assets for the task at hand.
Poilievre, advocating for Alberta to remain part of Canada, acknowledged the concerns of Albertans in his communication with Lloyd, emphasizing the importance of listening to their perspectives. He highlighted the interconnectedness of Alberta’s well-being with that of the entire country, citing benefits such as increased infrastructure, lower taxes, and enhanced security.
Lloyd expressed his honor in contributing to the referendum dialogue via social media, affirming his commitment to a united Canada. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney named Morgan Breitkreutz as the government’s senior adviser for the Alberta referendum, overseeing federal responses and key projects like the West Coast pipeline.
Separation proponent Mitch Sylvestre anticipated the Conservative stance to maintain Alberta within Canada, attributing it to the party’s political interests given their significant representation in the province. Evan Menzies, a former United Conservative Party member, praised Lloyd’s appointment, highlighting his integrity and understanding of Albertans’ frustrations.
However, political analyst Lori Williams cautioned against Poilievre’s approach, suggesting that emphasizing discontent with Ottawa could inadvertently fuel separatist sentiments. The upcoming referendum in October will include a pivotal question on Alberta’s Confederation status, alongside others concerning immigration and constitutional issues, allowing Albertans to voice their opinions on the matter.
