A teenage girl, Scarlet, shared her experience of struggling to stay warm during the winter due to her family’s financial constraints. Living with her disabled mother and father, who is her full-time caregiver, in Plymouth, Scarlet recounted how they often rely on second-hand coats from charity shops and hand-me-downs to keep themselves warm. She expressed how challenging it is for her family to afford new winter coats each year as they grow, leading to the constant wearing out of their limited clothing.
Scarlet vividly remembered shivering in a thin cardigan while attending school, emphasizing that as they grow older, the cost of coats becomes increasingly burdensome. The family’s struggle extended to heating their home during the winter, especially because Scarlet’s mother’s health deteriorates in the cold. The household faces issues such as mold and cold air seeping through cracks in the loft, further adding to their discomfort.
In a bid to help families like Scarlet’s, children’s charity Barnardo’s is supporting Scarlet by providing cooking sessions where she learns to prepare affordable and nutritious meals for her family. Research indicates that one in seven parents in the UK are concerned about affording warm clothing for their children this winter, with an estimated 300,000 children possibly lacking a winter coat.
The study coincides with the UK Health Security Agency issuing an amber Cold-Health Alert for parts of England due to the dropping temperatures. Barnardo’s child poverty fund has been instrumental in assisting families with clothing needs, including a case where a mother and her two young daughters had to flee their home due to domestic abuse, leaving them in urgent need of warm clothing.
Actress and Barnardo’s ambassador, Dame Helen Mirren, expressed her sadness at the situation many children face this winter, highlighting the vulnerability of families living on the edge. Barnardo’s chief executive Lynn Perry emphasized the importance of providing essentials to children to ensure they stay warm, healthy, and hopeful during the winter season. The charity encourages public donations to continue supporting families in need.
A recent YouGov survey of parents and children revealed the widespread concern about affording winter clothing, underscoring the urgent need for support for families facing financial challenges during the colder months.
