Chocoholics have witnessed a substantial increase in the prices of certain holiday treats, with some products soaring by as much as 72% compared to last Christmas, according to recent research. The consumer group Which? uncovered significant price hikes in various seasonal essentials. Tracking over 25,000 food and drink items in eight supermarkets all year round, Which? found that chocolate prices have surged by an average of 14.2% due to factors like poor cocoa harvests and supply challenges.
Specifically, popular chocolate products like Lindt Lindor milk chocolate truffles treat box (37g) at Asda and Lindt Milk Chocolate Teddy Christmas Tree Decorations at Morrisons have seen price spikes of 72.2% and 71.4%, respectively. Similarly, Lindt Christmas milk chocolate Teddy at Morrisons and Terry’s Chocolate Orange Dark Ball at Tesco have also experienced notable price increases.
Furthermore, the cost of Christmas turkeys has also risen by 4.7% year-on-year, attributed to issues such as bird flu outbreaks and increased operational expenses for farmers. Notably, a Tesco Finest Free Range Bronze Turkey Crown Medium (2.99kg) has surged by 27.8%, with a £14.95 upturn in price.
The latest data from the Which? tracker reveals that prices have climbed the most at Waitrose, up by 6.2% in the year leading to November. Conversely, Asda has maintained the lowest inflation rate at 3%, surpassing discount competitors like Aldi and Lidl in terms of affordability.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, emphasized that individual items in supermarkets have experienced substantial price hikes, urging consumers to consider budget-friendly options like Aldi, Lidl, and Asda for cost-effective shopping. Sewraz also recommended comparing unit prices across different products to ensure getting the best value for money.
Asda and Morrisons representatives reiterated their commitment to providing quality products at competitive prices throughout the festive season. Asda highlighted its consistent efforts to offer low prices to all customers, not just loyalty card holders. Meanwhile, Morrisons emphasized its dedication to providing value and savings for customers, including exclusive discounts and rewards for More Card members.
