England cricket icon Robin Smith dies at 62

England cricket icon Robin Smith has passed away at the age of 62. The former batsman, renowned for his performances in 62 Test matches for England, died while in Australia for the Ashes series. The sad news was shared by his close friend and ex-teammate Kevan James during an emotional interview on BBC Radio Solent.

Smith, who courageously battled health issues including alcoholism and depression, attended the recent Ashes Test in Perth where he reunited with former teammates Graham Gooch, David Gower, and Allan Lamb. Known as ‘The Judge’, Smith, a right-handed batsman, made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1988, showcasing his talent with two centuries in the subsequent Ashes series.

His remarkable career included a memorable innings of 175 against Brian Lara’s record-breaking score of 375 in Antigua. Smith retired from Test cricket with 4,236 runs at an average of 43.67, featuring nine centuries. Additionally, he represented England in 71 one-day internationals, contributing to the team’s journey to the 1992 World Cup final.

Despite retiring from international cricket in 1996, Smith continued playing for Hampshire until 2003, earning accolades as one of the county’s finest players. However, his post-retirement years were marred by struggles with alcoholism and depression, leading to hospitalization and relapses, especially following the recent loss of his father.

In a poignant interview with The Times, Smith candidly discussed his ongoing battle with alcoholism and mental health, highlighting the importance of seeking help and being open about one’s struggles. His untimely death marks the end of an era for English cricket, leaving behind a legacy of talent and resilience on and off the field.
