A tragic accident in Co Louth over the weekend claimed the lives of five individuals amidst adverse weather conditions, leaving the nation in mourning, according to Ireland’s deputy premier Simon Harris.
The fatal collision occurred on the L3168 near Dundalk when a VW Golf carrying three men and two women collided with a Toyota Land Cruiser on Saturday night. All occupants of the VW Golf, aged in their 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene, prompting a ‘major incident response’ by the authorities.
One male in his 20s from the VW Golf was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while a man and a woman from the Toyota were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Superintendent Charlie Armstrong praised the professionalism of the emergency responders at the challenging crash scene.
The tragic loss of the five young adults has deeply impacted the local communities and families involved, with condolences pouring in from various areas including Carrickmacross, Dromconrath, and Scotland. The incident is being investigated by the authorities, and an incident room has been set up at Dundalk Garda Station.
Expressing his condolences, Tanaiste Mr Harris acknowledged the sorrow felt nationwide due to the devastating accident. He commended the efforts of the emergency services in handling the distressing situation with utmost care and professionalism.
Garda authorities are appealing for any individuals with camera footage or images of the L3168 between specific times on the night of the incident to come forward and assist the investigation team.
