“Fraudulent App Targets Fire TV Stick Users”

Fire TV Stick users are advised to exercise caution when adding new applications to their devices due to a recent development. The popular tool “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, paving the way for a fraudulent copycat app aimed at defrauding users.

The disappearance of Downloader from Amazon’s online marketplace came to light over the weekend. For almost a decade, Downloader has been a valuable tool for Fire TV owners, enabling them to search for and install apps not found in official marketplaces.

Despite its wide usage, Downloader has faced a temporary suspension as confirmed by its developer, Elias Saba. Amazon flagged Downloader as a full web browser due to a recent update, violating its policy against third-party browsers on Fire TV devices.

Saba, who operates the Fire TV site AFTVnews, believes that the issue arose from Downloader incorrectly identifying itself as a browser. He has released an update, removing the browser registration, and is hopeful that Amazon will soon reinstate the app in the Appstore.

While waiting for the legitimate Downloader to be restored, users are cautioned about a fake version of the app attempting to deceive Fire TV owners into paying a weekly fee. Saba advises users not to install the fraudulent app and to report it to Amazon if encountered.

If users already have the genuine Downloader installed, they should refrain from deleting it as they may not be able to reinstall it until Amazon permits. Additionally, disabling Auto Offload in the device settings will prevent automatic removal of the app.

Pending Amazon’s approval of the fix, Downloader may make a comeback to Fire TV devices in the coming week, but users are advised to stay vigilant.
