New details regarding the alleged gunman at Brown University have been revealed by authorities. The suspect, a man dressed entirely in black, was described during a press briefing on the campus in Providence, Rhode Island, on Saturday evening. The unidentified individual entered the Barus and Holley engineering building at approximately 4:05 p.m. local time and initiated gunfire.
As of now, at least two individuals have lost their lives, while eight others sustained critical injuries but are now in stable condition at the hospital. The suspect is thought to have fled on foot, heading down Hope Street. The last sighting of the assailant was just after 4 p.m., coinciding with the initial emergency call reporting the incident.
A statement released by the prestigious Ivy League university stated, “We are providing an update on the active shooting incident. We regret to confirm that two victims have been reported deceased from the active shooting at the Barus and Holley engineering building.”
“There are eight additional victims in critical condition but stable at the hospital. A shelter-in-place directive remains in effect. The shooter or shooters have not yet been apprehended. Law enforcement activities are ongoing in the vicinity.”
It is possible that the assailant was granted access by others in the building, as the area was experiencing high traffic due to final exams, officials indicated. “Most of our buildings have card swipe access after hours, but given the final exam situation, there was likely significant foot traffic,” officials explained.
Authorities reported that no weapons were found following the incident, and the type of firearm used remains unknown.
