Loren Bunner and Jolee Callan decided to embark on a hike in the lush Pinhoti Trail area of Mount Cheaha, Alabama on a beautiful day. Prior to their hike, 20-year-old Loren posted a series of photos on his Instagram account, including one of 18-year-old Jolee in his car with his dog as they headed towards their hiking adventure.
Despite their recent breakup and efforts to remain friends, there were underlying tensions between the pair. Jolee, a petite but warm-hearted individual, was known for her love of school plays and academic dedication. She had previously dated Loren, an introvert who had a significant influence on her.
Their relationship was marked by Loren’s controlling behavior, pressuring Jolee to prioritize his needs and threatening self-harm if she tried to end things. However, as Jolee prepared for college, she finally found the courage to break free from the toxic dynamic.
Accepting Loren’s invitation to hike as friends, Jolee made a casual remark to a friend about her plans with him. Little did she know that it would be her last outing. Tragically, Loren later confessed to the authorities about murdering Jolee on Cheaha Mountain. Her lifeless body was found at the base of a cliff, shot twice and still carrying her backpack.
During his trial, Loren’s chilling 911 call confession was played, revealing the gruesome details of the crime. He admitted to luring Jolee to the secluded area under false pretenses and then fatally shooting her. The court also learned of his lack of remorse, as he callously bragged about the murder to his cellmates.
After a high-profile trial, Loren was sentenced to 52 years in prison in July 2017. The court ordered him to pay restitution to the Alabama Crime Victims Commission. Jolee’s family, friends, and community paid tribute to her by wearing purple, her favorite color symbolizing awareness for domestic violence. Jolee’s father, Michael, expressed relief at the verdict, noting that she was a beloved girl with a bright future ahead.
