“Halfords to Close Stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day”

Halfords has declared that it will shut down all its stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day this year. The automotive retailer aims to provide its staff nationwide with a well-deserved break and the opportunity to spend quality time with their families. While Halfords stores will be closed on Christmas Day as well, they will maintain regular operating hours on all other days throughout the festive period.

Henry Birch, the CEO of Halfords, expressed gratitude towards the hard work of the company’s employees who dedicate long hours throughout the year to keep the country moving. Recognizing their efforts, Birch emphasized the importance of allowing everyone to unwind and enjoy valuable moments with loved ones.

This decision to close stores on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day serves as a gesture of appreciation and aims to ensure that the teams return rejuvenated for the upcoming year.

Following a successful half-year performance, Halfords reported a rise in sales and profits. Cycling business sales surged by 9% for the half-year ending on September 26 compared to the previous year, contributing to a 3.3% increase in total revenues to £893.3 million. Additionally, like-for-like motoring revenues increased by 1.1%, and the autocentres business witnessed a 4.3% growth.

Apart from Halfords, other retailers like Home Bargains and Aldi have also opted to keep their stores closed on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. This decision aligns with a growing trend among stores to prioritize employees’ well-being during the holiday season.

Home Bargains conveyed its appreciation to its staff through a Facebook post, thanking them for their hard work and encouraging them to relax and enjoy the Christmas break with their families. Similarly, Aldi will extend its operating hours leading up to Christmas to accommodate customer needs and will remain closed on Boxing Day to allow its employees to cherish the festive period with their loved ones.

These closures on key holiday dates are part of a broader industry shift towards valuing work-life balance and recognizing the dedication of employees during busy periods.
