Canada’s national police force announced on Monday the apprehension of a 51-year-old individual accused of issuing death threats against Prime Minister Mark Carney. Marc-André Porlier, a resident of Montreal, faces charges of making threats to cause harm or death, as disclosed in a press release by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The threats were reportedly conveyed through an email distributed to various undisclosed recipients, including a senator, as outlined in the official statement.
Apart from targeting the Prime Minister, the suspect allegedly menaced “all Canadian police officers,” as indicated in the legal documentation. It was revealed by law enforcement authorities that Porlier had previously been convicted of arson and vandalism for igniting a fire at a church in Toronto back in 2017. At the time of his recent arrest, he was still serving probation for those offenses, according to an RCMP representative.
Porlier made a court appearance on Saturday, according to the RCMP press release. It is emphasized that the charges against him remain unproven in court proceedings.
