A man has been found guilty of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend in front of their infant child and now faces a potential life sentence. Shawn Bolden Jr was convicted by a jury on charges of malice and felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon during a crime related to the death of Deanna Ellison, 29, in 2021.
The incident stemmed from Ellison’s decision to end the relationship with Bolden after he physically assaulted her on Mother’s Day in 2020. Despite their separation, they had agreed to co-parent their child once born. However, on May 6, 2021, neighbors alerted the Port Wentworth Police Department about gunshots and a man fleeing from Ellison’s residence.
Upon arrival, first responders had to forcibly enter the home and discovered a tragic scene: Ellison’s lifeless body covered in blood, with their crying infant nearby. The medical examiner confirmed Deanna’s death resulted from 11 gunshot wounds.
Shortly after the crime, an anonymous 911 call reported that Bolden had confessed to the murder. Law enforcement issued a statewide alert, leading to Bolden’s apprehension over 100 miles away after a high-speed chase.
During the trial, body camera footage and expert testimonies highlighted the harrowing nature of the crime. Prosecutors emphasized Bolden’s callous actions and lack of concern for his son’s and Ellison’s well-being during the investigation.
District Attorney Shalena Cook Jones stated that Bolden had callously shot Ellison multiple times in front of their infant child just days before what would have been Deanna’s first Mother’s Day. Bolden was also found guilty of aggravated assault and firearm-related charges.
Sentencing is set for January 9, with the prosecution seeking a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Deanna’s obituary described her as a vibrant and compassionate individual, cherished for her infectious laughter, warm smile, and positive presence in the lives of those around her.
