The shift from conventional TV to streaming continues to gain momentum as Sky, a key player in the sector, introduces innovative devices like the Stream box and Glass TV. These devices utilize broadband to deliver live and on-demand content directly to homes, eliminating the need for traditional satellite dishes. While Sky has been a dominant force in this space, new alternatives are emerging.
One such alternative is Freely, launched in 2024 and supported by the creators of Freeview. Freely offers free access to popular TV shows, sports, and movies via broadband streaming. Initially, users required a new TV with built-in Freely capabilities to access the service, which was somewhat inconvenient. However, the recent introduction of a Freely-compatible Pleio puck now allows existing televisions to access the platform.
Expanding the array of choices, Manhattan has unveiled its inaugural Freely set-top box. Known for its successful Freeview boxes akin to Sky Q, Manhattan is shifting focus with the launch of the Aero 4K TV Streamer in February. This streaming-only device promises access to 60 live TV channels and over 75,000 hours of on-demand content without the need for a monthly subscription. Like Sky’s Stream box, content is delivered via Wi-Fi, eliminating the necessity for an antenna or satellite dish.
Powered by the award-winning TiVo OS, the Aero not only provides access to Freely but also offers popular apps like Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, and YouTube. Additionally, it includes TiVo+, featuring approximately 400 free streaming channels and a vast library of on-demand movies and TV shows.
The Aero supports 4K picture quality, features voice search functionality, but lacks the capability to record programs to a hard drive. Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, expressed enthusiasm for the Aero’s launch, emphasizing its ability to upgrade any TV affordably by simply connecting to Wi-Fi for access to live TV, catch-up services, and favorite streaming apps.
The Manhattan Aero 4K TV Streamer with Freely is set to be released in February 2026, priced at £69.99, and will be available at retailers such as Currys, John Lewis, and Amazon.
