Satellite images indicate that North Korea has been enhancing its suspected nuclear capabilities through new excavations that may include enrichment facilities, heat exchangers, and underground nuclear waste storage facilities.
These findings were revealed in a report by 38 North, a US-based website that monitors North Korea and its impact on global security and external affairs.
The report highlights significant modernization and expansion efforts at the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center between October and November 2025. The expansion of the Yongbyon nuclear plant aligns with Kim’s goal to significantly grow the country’s nuclear arsenal.
The Yongbyon facility plays a crucial role in producing nuclear material for North Korea’s weapons program, being the sole producer of plutonium and a major source of enriched uranium. The improvements made at the facility support Kim’s objective of expanding the country’s nuclear weapons stockpile.
New buildings for storing radioactive waste have been constructed at the plant, along with laboratories for enriching uranium, an essential component for nuclear warheads.
Satellite imagery shows the installation of six potential heat exchangers near the main building of the suspected enrichment facility, crucial for the smooth and safe operation of nuclear power plants.
In the past, during a US-North Korea summit, Kim Jong-Un proposed closing the country’s primary nuclear weapons factory in exchange for partial relief from internal sanctions. However, the offer was rejected by Trump in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2019.
Recent satellite images also captured ongoing excavation activities near the Old Waste Site for a semi-buried radioactive waste storage facility, in line with North Korea’s aim to boost nuclear material production.
Refurbishment work was observed at a hydrogen fluoride handling building, indicating potential upgrades or dismantlement. The construction of new enrichment, cooling, and waste facilities is evident in satellite images, indicating North Korea’s efforts to expand its nuclear arsenal.
Overall, the report notes various activities throughout 2025, such as reactor operations, testing of a light water reactor, reprocessing campaigns, and the construction of new facilities, in line with Kim’s push for exponential growth in nuclear weapons capabilities.
