A peculiar marvel of nature, the narwhal tusk stands out for its unique characteristics. Growing up to three meters long, this straight tusk, an upper tooth piercing through the whale’s lip, is distinct for its lack of curves. Researchers from around the globe claim to have unraveled the mystery behind its straight growth, attributing it to the tusk’s distinctive pattern of opposing spirals.
The revelation, detailed in a recent publication in Nature Communications, sheds light on how the narwhal’s tusk maintains its straight form through the presence of two opposing spirals, one clockwise and the other counterclockwise. The inquiry started when Henrik Birkedal, a scientist at Aarhus University, was approached by a colleague studying molecular chirality. Fascinated by the uniform leftward spirals in narwhal tusks, the team embarked on a collaborative effort involving biologists from Greenland and physicists from Sweden to delve into the structural composition of the tusks and their spirals.
Utilizing advanced imaging techniques akin to CT scans, the researchers discovered a complex arrangement of two contrary spirals within the tusks: a left-handed spiral on the outer cementum layer and a right-handed spiral in the inner dentine layer.
