Wes Streeting has condemned Baroness Mone for the need to pursue legal action to recover millions owed to taxpayers due to faulty PPE. The Health Secretary intensified pressure on the disgraced peer, reiterating the demand for repayment of the substantial bill.
Streeting hinted at undisclosed strategies being employed to retrieve the funds owed by PPE Medpro, keeping details confidential to prevent Baroness Mone’s legal team from gaining an advantage. When questioned on LBC about the outstanding money, Streeting affirmed the pursuit of repayment but refrained from divulging specific tactics to avoid giving insights to Baroness Mone’s legal team.
The consortium led by Baroness Mone’s husband, Doug Barrowman, PPE Medpro, faced legal action from the Department of Health and Social Care for supplying 25 million “defective” gowns during the pandemic. Recent reports from the Mirror revealed the company’s administration status, leaving a £39 million debt to the tax authorities.
In addition to the £148 million in damages, costs, and interest resulting from a High Court lawsuit over non-sterile gowns, Baroness Mone and Mr. Barrowman, residing in the tax haven of Isle of Man, allegedly profited £65 million from PPE deals totaling £202 million secured after lobbying the government.
The company’s administration coincided with a significant court ruling, potentially escalating the owed amount to taxpayers to £190 million. Concurrently, investigations by the National Crime Agency are ongoing concerning the couple and their company, both of whom deny any wrongdoing.
Baroness Mone’s legal representatives at Grosvenor Law criticized Streeting for allegedly prejudicing a live criminal investigation and highlighted inaccuracies in statements made by government officials. They emphasized their clients’ innocence, expressed confidence in the truth prevailing, and refrained from further comments.
