“Tragic Loss: Pastor Killed Saving Wife in Highway Collision”

A cherished church pastor met a tragic end when a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) struck his vehicle on the M60 after a tire blowout. The HGV swerved uncontrollably, crossed lanes near Swinton, Salford, crashed through a central barrier, and collided with a BMW driven by David Lalgee, 64, who tragically succumbed to severe injuries despite medical efforts.

Mr. Lalgee, a grandfather of nine, heroically shielded his wife, Jo, from the oncoming danger by swerving his car to absorb the impact, sacrificing his own life to save hers. The family praised his selfless act, stating that he always prioritized others over himself.

The coroner confirmed that no criminal negligence contributed to the incident, attributing it to an unavoidable tire blowout. Witnesses described the collision as sounding like an explosion, with the HGV driver, Tracy Carradice, reporting an unexpected loss of control following the blowout.

Investigations revealed no pre-existing mechanical issues with the HGV, making it unclear why the tire failed. Despite the driver’s experience and routine route familiarity, the tire blowout led to an irrecoverable loss of control, resulting in the tragic accident that claimed Mr. Lalgee’s life.

Mr. Lalgee, a former police officer and pastor of Church Alive in Blackpool, was remembered as a loving and charitable individual who dedicated his life to serving others. The coroner expressed deep sorrow over the loss, acknowledging Mr. Lalgee’s significant impact on society and offering condolences to his grieving family.

The cause of death was determined to be multiple traumatic injuries from the collision. The coroner lamented the lack of a definitive explanation for the tragedy, emphasizing the profound loss felt by all who knew Mr. Lalgee.
