Tragic Loss Sparks Call for Stricter DUI Penalties

Mark Squires tragically lost his life just 19 days after welcoming his second child. His young daughter, now almost three years old, gazes at photos of her father, curious about the man she will never meet. This heartbreaking incident weighed heavily in a sentencing decision in St. John’s, where a judge questioned the effectiveness of current impaired driving penalties in deterring individuals from driving under the influence.

Rodney Constantine, after consuming as many as 15 drinks one evening in December 2023, drove his car from a bar in St. John’s to a friend’s residence. Following a heated argument with an ex-partner, Constantine stayed in the car for about 45 minutes before insisting that his friends leave. Tragically, Andrew Squires and Mark Squires, cousins, were passengers in the vehicle as Constantine’s behavior became increasingly erratic.

Despite their pleas, Constantine refused to stop the car, leading to a fatal crash that claimed Mark Squires’ life. The vehicle was traveling well above the speed limit when it lost control, resulting in a fiery wreck. Constantine and Andrew Squires sustained serious injuries, while Mark Squires tragically did not survive.

Judge Bruce Short condemned the senseless tragedy, emphasizing the need for stricter consequences for impaired driving offenses. He criticized the inadequacy of current penalties and raised concerns about the deterrent effect of existing laws. Short also highlighted the flaws in the legal system, noting Constantine’s reckless behavior following the crash and his lack of remorse.

Constantine, who received a five-year prison sentence, was also handed a lifetime driving ban. Short expressed disappointment in the sentence’s leniency and stressed the importance of imposing harsher penalties to combat impaired driving effectively.

The Squires family, in response to the sentencing decision, expressed gratitude for the judge’s firm stance against impaired driving. They emphasized the devastating impact of such incidents on families and the need for stronger measures to prevent further tragedies. The family gathered at the crash site to pay tribute to Mark Squires, reflecting on his untimely death and the void left in their lives.

Overall, the case underscores the urgent need for more stringent laws and penalties to deter individuals from driving under the influence and prevent future tragedies like the one that claimed Mark Squires’ life.
