“Unity Boxing Centre Illuminates Diversity with Flag Display”

Abdul Majid emphasizes the importance of displaying flags correctly as he switches on the lights at Rotherham’s Unity Boxing Centre. The gym, located in repurposed offices previously used by the town’s renowned steel mill, showcases flags from numerous countries, illuminated by strip lights.

The 6ft 3 boxing coach, welcoming everyone, explains that the flags serve to acknowledge the diverse backgrounds of the numerous boxers, both young and old, who train there, demonstrating respect for their respective countries.

Taking us on a tour of the flags above murals of boxing icons, including his brother Kash Ali, a European Champion, Abdul shares the significance behind each flag, starting with England where he was born. He proudly mentions his grandfather’s service for Britain in World War II in Burma, leading to their settlement in the country.

Pointing out the flags representing his ancestry in Kashmir, Pakistan, Abdul recalls the evolving mix of boxers joining the gym from countries like Yemen, Lebanon, Wales, Romania, Poland, Palestine, Turkey, and Jamaica, fostering a sense of unity among them.

After the loss of his father, Abdul found solace in supporting youths at the gym, emphasizing the inclusive and unified atmosphere prevailing regardless of individuals’ nationalities or backgrounds.

Situated in Rawmarsh, amidst the remnants of the town’s industrial past, the boxing gym stands as a symbol of unity, defying Rotherham’s historical divisions despite the town’s association with troubling incidents like the child sexual exploitation scandal.

In the wake of misinformation-fueled riots following a tragic incident in Southport, the town faced further unrest with the Rise the Colours movement spreading, leading to protests and divisive actions like the graffiti on the Rotherham Central Mosque.

Despite the challenges faced by Rotherham, Abdul and his team at the Unity Boxing Centre remain committed to fostering positivity and overcoming divisions, with the young boxers embodying resilience and camaraderie that uplifts the community.

Amidst the backdrop of escalating tensions, the gym serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging individuals to embrace unity and compassion, echoing Abdul’s belief in continuous learning and striving for personal growth.

As Rotherham grapples with social discord, the gym’s message of inclusivity and mutual respect stands strong, exemplified by the dedication of its coaches and the resilience of its young members, who transcend differences to stand together as one community.
