A mother who allegedly allowed her toddler to suffer in a dirty crib claimed to authorities that she felt no remorse upon discovering the child deceased.
Charged with the murder of their 18-month-old daughter in Utah, a couple is accused of neglecting the child by leaving her unattended for extended periods, providing inadequate food, and making her sleep in a crib filled with trash and leftover food.
Carrie Marie Murray and Mitchell Chesnut Murray, aged 31, were arrested and are facing charges of aggravated murder and child abuse for the death of Ruby Marie Murray. The child was found unresponsive on March 19 and the couple is currently in custody without bail.
According to reports, Carrie Murray, a trained nurse, found her daughter lifeless in her crib and called emergency services but did not attempt lifesaving efforts. She mentioned to dispatchers that she believed the child was beyond help due to her medical training.
During questioning, the mother displayed detachment and speculated that the child may have died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, despite acknowledging that Ruby was older than the typical age for such a tragedy. She expressed no sense of responsibility for the incident, stating that she did not feel any guilt.
Upon reviewing footage from a baby monitor, authorities described the horrific conditions in which Ruby was living. The crib was filled with sippy cups, waffles, and food debris, while garbage and wrappers were found under the mattress. The room was kept warm, but the child’s body temperature was dangerously low, putting her at risk of hypothermia.
Investigators noted that loud music, including tracks by Green Day and Fall Out Boy, played continuously in Ruby’s room, affecting her sleep. The parents admitted that the music disrupted her rest. Ruby was fed irregularly, mostly with toasted waffles left in her crib, rather than proper baby food.
Video evidence revealed that on the day before her death, Ruby spent the entire day in her crib, with minimal interaction from her parents. Mitchell Murray admitted to a routine of “crib days,” where Ruby remained in the cot while he worked, occurring once or twice a week. In the days leading up to her death, Ruby spent very little time outside the crib and had limited human contact.
The cause of Ruby’s death was determined to be dehydration and malnutrition. The parents are accused of subjecting the child to harsh conditions, including heat, darkness, isolation, and sleep deprivation. Carrie and Mitchell Murray are currently in custody as the investigation unfolds.
