Regarding trade negotiations, Vance characterized Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre as insignificant, emphasizing his minimal impact on the discussions. He mentioned that Poilievre expressed doubts about Trump’s commitment to honoring the trade deal, citing existing agreements negotiated by former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney as crucial for protecting Canada from potential tariffs.
The White House and Vance’s office have not yet responded to requests for comments on the trade deal. Trump recently announced an agreement to postpone imposing new tariffs on Canadian products for three days following a call with Carney. The deal, which resulted from extensive bilateral talks, was deemed beneficial for both countries by Trump.
Reports indicate that the trade deal includes reductions in sectoral tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles by the United States. In return, Carney urged provincial leaders to reintroduce American alcohol products into Canadian stores. The specifics of the agreement, including concessions made by Canada, remain unclear. Trump asserted that the deal would eliminate tariffs on American farmers entirely.
Dominic LeBlanc, the Canada-U.S. Minister, returned to Washington for further negotiations with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer ahead of an impending deadline. Vance emphasized that Trump aims to influence Canada’s behavior through the trade deal, highlighting shifts in Canadian policies aligning with Trump’s approach.
Vance underscored the disrupted Canada-U.S. relationship under Trump’s presidency, marked by tariffs and annexation threats. He praised Jivani for discreetly engaging in the negotiations, emphasizing the MP’s contributions to areas of mutual benefit such as energy and automobile trade policies.
The friendship between Vance and Jivani, dating back to their time at Yale, has played a significant role in the negotiations. Vance highlighted Jivani’s commitment to Canada’s success and effective advocacy in key trade areas. Jivani’s efforts have caused internal discord within the Canadian Conservative Party, particularly with Poilievre, who advocates for tariff-free agreements with the U.S.
