Rachel Reeves plans to allocate a significant sum of money towards revamping playgrounds in the upcoming budget announcement. The Chancellor is expected to commit £18 million to refurbish 200 children’s play areas nationwide that have been neglected in the past. Priority will be given to the most deprived regions for this financial boost, according to insider information obtained by the Mirror.
A source from the Treasury stated that this funding initiative aims to rejuvenate play spaces across England, providing safe and engaging environments for thousands of children. The goal is to enhance and empower communities by ensuring every child has access to a place for play and development, regardless of their location.
A recent report from the Raising the National Play Commission emphasized the numerous benefits of outdoor play but also highlighted the issue of playground closures. Between 2012 and 2022, at least 400 playgrounds shut down in England, with many existing ones falling into disrepair due to insufficient maintenance. Alarmingly, the report revealed that two million children do not reside within a 10-minute walk of a playground.
Eugene Minogue, the Executive Director of Play England, welcomed the funding allocated to playgrounds, signaling a positive shift in the government’s focus on play. He emphasized the inequality in playground provision across England, particularly in deprived areas, stressing the importance of equitable access to play spaces for all children.
Mr. Minogue underscored that children represent the future and should have adequate opportunities for play. He proposed that in conjunction with a new national play strategy, this funding could mark the beginning of meaningful and lasting change benefiting children, families, and communities throughout England.
Labour MP Tom Hayes, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Play, remarked on the long overdue attention being given to playgrounds. He highlighted the importance of providing safe, enjoyable, and inclusive play areas for every child, acknowledging the positive impact such investments can have on communities.
Hayes also criticized the previous government’s neglect of playgrounds, citing it as a factor that could alienate people from politics. He viewed the current investment as a step towards not only improving playgrounds but also fostering stronger and more vibrant communities.
