A teenage nursery worker showed a disturbing lack of emotion when questioned by police about raping and sexually abusing children as young as three by repeatedly responding “no comment” during his arrest.
Thomas Waller, 18, was employed at a nursery for the summer where he was responsible for assisting children with toileting and changing. Shortly after starting his job, he exploited his position to gain the trust of two young boys and subjected them to sexual abuse.
Following the children’s disclosure to their parents, Waller was arrested and subsequently convicted of rape, inciting sexual activity, and possessing indecent images. Police discovered Waller’s DNA on the victims’ clothing, and indecent images of another child were found on his phone.
During his police interview, Waller maintained a stoic demeanor, refusing to provide any information by repeatedly stating “no comment” when questioned about the incriminating evidence found against him.
The judge, in sentencing Waller to 10 years in detention and five on licence at a young offender institution, expressed sympathy for the victims’ families who now bear the emotional burden of his despicable actions. Child D’s father described the lasting trauma inflicted on his son, emphasizing the profound impact on their family.
The judge also acknowledged the manipulative and calculated nature of Waller’s actions, highlighting the devastating consequences for the innocent children he preyed upon.
