A massive fire engulfed multiple apartment buildings in Hong Kong, with dramatic footage capturing residents moving calmly through the area before it turned into a raging inferno. The incident, which occurred in the Chinese-administered territory, resulted in the death of at least four individuals, including a firefighter who responded to the emergency. The buildings were shrouded in thick smoke, and the flames spread rapidly, affecting the surrounding vegetation.
An onlooker recorded the initial stages of the fire, showing a small flame emerging at the base of a scaffolding net. Subsequent videos depicted the fire intensifying, engulfing the scaffold and emitting dense smoke. The blaze progressed quickly, causing destruction to the scaffolding structure and becoming visible from a considerable distance. Wang Fuk Court, a residential complex comprising eight blocks with a total of 2,000 units, saw several of its buildings catch fire.
Authorities reported that only four fatalities occurred despite the complex’s capacity to accommodate thousands of residents. Seven individuals were hospitalized, with two in critical condition and one in stable condition. Firefighters also sustained injuries while battling the flames. The fire department in Hong Kong received the initial fire reports and escalated the situation to a severe level 4 alert. As a result, a section of the nearby Tai Po highway was closed, and bus routes were diverted.
Concerns remain about individuals possibly trapped within the burning complex, with reports suggesting that some may still be inside. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, although attention has been drawn to the bamboo scaffolding prevalent in Hong Kong, constructed using nylon fasteners. Further investigations are underway to ascertain the origins of the blaze and evaluate the extent of the damage.
