A firefighter tragically lost his life in a devastating incident at a residential building in Hong Kong when he became separated from his team during the operation. Identified as Ho Wai-ho, a dedicated 37-year-old firefighter with nine years of service, he responded to the fire outbreak at Wang Fuk Court in the Tai Po district of Hong Kong at 3:01 pm local time on Wednesday.
Unfortunately, at 3:30 pm, Ho Wai-ho lost contact with his colleagues. Thirty minutes later, he was discovered unconscious with facial burns in an open area. Despite immediate first aid and CPR by paramedics, he succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
Expressing deep sorrow, Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung extended condolences to Mr. Ho’s family for his sacrifice in the line of duty. The incident has claimed at least 12 lives, including eight women and three men, with 16 others sustaining injuries. Concerns linger over the possibility of more individuals trapped within the complex of Wang Fuk Court, comprising eight blocks and housing over 1,900 households.
Residents have expressed outrage over alleged failures in the fire alarm system, which reportedly did not activate promptly during the emergency. Former district council member Herman Yiu Kwan-ho reported that occupants were only alerted when a security guard physically notified them, leaving little time for evacuation, according to resident Chan Kwong-tak, 83.
The fire rapidly spread via bamboo scaffolding surrounding the building, raising questions about the quality of ongoing renovation work. Several residents, including a woman named Cheung, have pointed out instances of construction workers smoking in the area. Despite complaints and fines issued, concerns remained unaddressed, potentially contributing to the tragic fire incident.
Amid the chaos, evacuations are ongoing, with affected residents being relocated to temporary shelters and medical facilities for treatment. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu has initiated emergency response mechanisms to coordinate rescue efforts and support those impacted by the disaster.
