An 18-year-old male has been accused of murder and attempted murder following the discovery of a deceased schoolgirl.
The victim, Lainie Williams, aged 17, was found deceased at her residence in Cefn Fforest, South Wales, on Thursday morning. Her mother, Rhian Stephens, 38, sustained severe injuries but has since been released from the hospital. Police responded to an incident at Wheatley Place at approximately 7:15 am after receiving reports of two individuals sustaining serious injuries.
Cameron Cheng, 18, from Newbridge, has been charged by Gwent Police with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a bladed object in a public location. Cheng, identified as a British national from Newbridge, has been detained for a court appearance at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend stated, “We are aware of the high level of interest in this case. It is crucial for individuals to be mindful of their language, specifically online comments, as they could impact our ability to bring perpetrators of criminal acts to justice.”
Townsend added, “Although we have made significant progress in the investigation, our inquiries are ongoing, and residents may continue to see police presence in the area. If anyone possesses information, we urge them to speak with our officers or reach out to us through the usual channels.”

Cefn Fforest Councillor Shane Williams shared, “We are profoundly shocked and saddened by the unfolding events. As council members, we aim to provide reassurance to everyone, and our hearts go out to the family during this difficult time… The loss of a young life in such a manner is truly tragic.”
