Authorities in British Columbia have broadened evacuation mandates tied to the region’s biggest wildfire. The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District recently expanded evacuation orders for an area south of the Pear Lake wildfire to encompass properties near Highway 99 in the Marble Canyon vicinity. Similarly, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District has extended an evacuation order along Highway 99, west of the Highway 97 intersection. The combined expanded orders now affect nearly 200 properties.
Moreover, the Ts’kw’aylaxw First Nation has issued evacuation directives for multiple reserves. All three governing bodies have also enlarged evacuation alerts.
The Pear Lake wildfire has scorched over 1,647 square kilometers, as reported by the B.C. Wildfire Service, resulting in the destruction of structures on over 120 properties, predominantly in the Clinton area. Notably, the fire is most active along its western and southern perimeters.
In a separate incident, Environment Canada has issued a yellow severe thunderstorm watch for a significant portion of the B.C. Interior, Cariboo, and Metro Vancouver regions, coupled with severe thunderstorm warnings for sections of Vancouver Island. The department advises seeking immediate shelter when a thunderstorm approaches.
Furthermore, the B.C. Wildfire Service has alerted about shifting weather patterns that could trigger dry lightning strikes and strong winds across the southern and central Interior, with localized gusts up to 80 kilometers per hour accompanying certain thunderstorms. These conditions may exacerbate existing fires and potentially lead to new wildfire outbreaks.
On a positive note, firefighters swiftly responded to a fresh lightning-sparked wildfire in the Jacko Lake vicinity, just south of Kamloops. By the evening of the same day, the fire had expanded to 44 hectares and was considered “being held,” indicating no expected spread beyond current boundaries. The wildfire service has mobilized 19 personnel and air crews to manage the situation, with ongoing efforts to fortify containment lines.
As of the latest update, British Columbia is grappling with over 150 active wildfires, with close to 60 of them categorized as uncontained. The provincial state of emergency linked to wildfires has been extended by the B.C. government until at least August 29.
